Keeping You Safe At The Ride
Since the very first Ride for Kids, the Ride has worked diligently to be the safest of biking events. As a result, it has maintained an excellent safety record. The Ride is a day that is enjoyed by riders and volunteers alike. On the day of the Ride, safety is the number one priority. Bike technicians, medical staff, water stop personnel, police officers, and road crew all work diligently to be certain that you have a safe enjoyable event as you ride on behalf of the kids that benefit from your hard work.
As we continue this wonderful event, your safety remains our priority. To provide the safest environment, all participants need to keep the following safety rules:
Rules- Helmets – Every rider should provide his own helmet and wear it for the duration of the Ride. The Ride does not guarantee use availability of extra helmets.
-
Children - In the past, children have participated in this event with their parents. We are
delighted by their presence and participation the day of the Ride. But, as the Ride grows to
over 1200 riders, it is necessary to enforce the following:
- Children must be at least 12 years of age to ride alone in this event.
- For safety reasons, children under 12 years of age are NOT permitted to participate in the ride in any way.
- Due to the great number of riders, bike strollers will NOT be allowed at the event. (Strollers are attached to bikes and children sit in them but do not peddle.)
- Guardians must sign a permission form on the day of the ride for any riders between 12 and 18 years of age.
- Bikes - We are most fortunate to have many volunteer mechanics support our riders the entire day. It is important to remember that it is the rider's responsibility to bring a bike that is in good working order. There will not be time for the mechanics to do anything other than routine adjustments to bikes on the day of the Ride. We will continue to do our best to assist with all mechanical issues that may occur while you are out on the route.
- Music - The use of personal music devices while riding in the Ride for Kids is not permitted, since it can prevent awareness of approaching traffic.
- Be Predictable - Don't make sudden turns or stop suddenly.
- Use Signals - Notify riders of changes with hand and verbal signals.
- Pass On The Left - Slower riders should stay to the right. Announce "on your left" before overtaking other riders.
- Announce Approaching Traffic - Call out "car back" or "car ahead" to announce approaching traffic.
- Dress Appropriately - Know what weather is expected and dress accordingly. Wearing layers of clothing is a good idea.
- Ride In Single File - Please be aware that traffic is not stopped for the Ride.
- Watch For Railroad Tracks - Riders will be asked to dismount at particularly treacherous railroad crossings.
- Water - Remember to drink plenty.
- Q: Do I have to be an experienced rider to participate? A: No. Anyone who knows how to ride a bike can do it! The Ride for Kids is not a race. It is a fun bike tour which loops through flat, scenic back roads of Southeastern Massachusetts. Bike mechanics, courtesy vans en route, medical and emergency services , and fully equipped Water Stops make this event an excellent choice for both the novice and experienced rider. We recommend some level of physical preparation or training as well as ensuring your bicycle is in working condition & road worthy. Q: How old do I have to be to participate? A: Riders must be 12 years of age or older. Riders between 12 & 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and a waiver must be signed. Q: How long is the Ride? A: You can register to ride 25, 50 or 100 miles. Choose the distance that best suits you. And you don't need to worry about racing back - the barbecue doesn't end until after the last rider finishes! Q: Do I have to ride to get involved? A: No. We need over 500 volunteers to make sure everything runs smoothly. You can volunteer to help the day of the Ride. You can donate your company's products or services. You can sponsor a rider or team. Or make a general donation to the Ride for Kids. Please contact Ride headquarters in advance to participate. Q: Where is the Ride? A: The Ride begins and ends at 10 Lincoln Road (across from Gold's Gym) off of Route One in Foxboro.? Riders have the use of the gym on the day of the Ride. (See map). Q: How much money must I raise to participate? A: Each rider, whether riding independently or as part of a team, is required to raise $1,500. Your fundraising helps the Ride for Kids reach new goals and impact more children each year. Ask friends, neighbors, and coworkers to sponsor your ride. The more people you ask, the more money you will raise for at-risk children in Massachusetts. Q: What if there is a problem or emergency? A: Fully equipped Water Stops and trained medical assistants ensure the safety of each and every rider. Mechanics and road crew travel the routes in marked vans throughout the day to respond to flat tires and other mechanical problems. Q: What time does the Ride start? A: The start time depends on the distance you choose to ride. The 25-mile ride has 2 waves starting at 10am and 11:00am, the 50-mile ride starts at 8:30 a.m., and the 100-mile ride starts at 7 a.m. Riders depart in waves, beginning at their start times. Q: Is the Ride for Kids a peanut-free event? A: No. Due to the nature of the event and the food items we serve, which are all generously donated, we can not convert the Ride for Kids to a peanut free event. If you have a peanut allergy, please plan accordingly, and contact the Ride for Kids office with any questions.
